Basements: A Burden or a Bonus?

Bowing Basement Wall

A basement can be a great asset to a home, however if precautions are not taken, a basement can easily become a financial burden. Basements provide the perfect additional space, whether it be a family room, workspace, a bedroom, or simply just for storage. Additionally, a basement in excellent condition is a great selling point when putting your home on the market.

Because basements are mostly underground they are susceptible to more problems than rooms above ground level. Bowing basement walls are a major structural issue that lead to many other problems including water damage and, in severe cases, caving walls. Bowing basement walls can be caused by a number of things, the most common include:

Improper Drainage

Excess water in the soil outside of basement walls creates more pressure being pushed onto the walls. This leads to the walls beginning to bow under the pressure, which creates cracks in the walls, also leading to water being able to find its way into your basement - causing further damage.

Having excess water outside your basement walls can be caused by rainwater being drained directly beside the home or the ground not being properly sloped prior to construction.

Soils

Red clay expands when wet, and shrinks when it dries. The expansion of the soil can cause serious damage when it pushes against the basement walls, and the shrinkage of the soil can cause further structural problems.
